January one Bible reading

Genesis 1, 2, 3  and  Matthew 1

I believe Genesis 1:1 is one of the most important verses of the entire Bible.  If we can accept this verse, then all the miraculous things of the Bible are easy to believe.  Jesus could on water.  Jesus could heal the sick.  God can keep all His promises.  Jesus could call Lazarus out of the grave.  And He can call us out of our grave too.

Whereas, if we reject Genesis 1:1, then how can we believe anything in the Bible?  If the very first verse of the Bible is not true then the entire Bible is unreliable, and our faith is built on the sand.

In verse 3, what was the light?  God did not create the heavenly bodies (sun, moon, and stars) until verse 14.

Verse 26 – it was very generous of God to make anything in His own image.  I wonder why He did.

Verse 28 – the story goes that the father of a large family was asked why he had so many children.  He replied that the first commandment for people in the Bible is to be fruitful and multiply.  "Yes," the other person said, "but God did not say that you were to do it all by yourself!"

I like the comments for each day of creation that God saw that it was good, and then at the end of the week He saw that it was very good.  How like God it is to do good!  And how like people to mess it up!

2:9  This is exactly like all of life.  In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  The good and the bad were there right there together.  The good choice and the bad choice were next to each other.  Life would be easier if the good choice was one way and the bad choice was the opposite way.  But life seems not to be that way.  As one would stand in the Garden of Eden looking at the two trees they would be together, next to each other.  They mush have both been beautiful trees.  The fruit of each must have equally appealing.  So our choices are often not easily determined to be good or bad.  Our choices are often not easily determined to be right or wrong, of God or of Satan.  But as with the trees in Eden, our choices can have deadly consequences too.  Or our choices can lead to a blessing for ourselves and others.

3:1  Why did God even create the serpent?

3:6  We often blame Eve for eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge, but Adam was there with her.  He should have stopped her.  He is as guilty as Eve.  In Sunday school yesterday (December 30) we discussed the verses about women submitting to their husbands and husbands loving their wives as Christ loved and protects the Church.  Adam failed to love and protect his wife.

3:7-11  There is no shame when husband and wife are naked before each other.  But naked before God is a fearful thing.

3:15  As soon as there is sin, there is also the solution.  Jesus will crush the head of Satan.

Matthew 1  The women in the genealogy are in interesting mix of good stories and bad stories.

want to join us?

This is for anyone from Eicher Emmanuel Mennonite Church or anyone who simply wants to read the same daily Bible reading and share comments about God's word.  Our plan is to read the Bible through during 2013 and bless each other with comments about what we have read.  Each participant is encouraged to post their comments, that is to be the blessing of this process.  Possibilities for comments could include: a blessing received, a challenge to follow God closer, a question about the daily text, why don't people do what these verses say we should do, or whatever comment you may wish.  You may disagree with what the Bible says.

You may participate at whatever level you wish.  But the purpose of this blog is to encourage as many people as possible to grow in Bible reading and in Bible understanding.  I will post a blog each day with the daily readings for each day for a week from the current date.  I will also post my comments about the reading for that day.

Your posts may comment on the Bible passage or what others have posted about the passage.  The purpose, again, of this blog is to encourage Bible reading and Bible understanding.  The purpose IS NOT to demonstrate any person's great knowledge or writing skill.  Also, the purpose is not to make light of any person or their ideas about the Bible.

You are encouraged to read the entire daily reading.  But if you are unable to do the daily reading you can still read the comments and add your comments. You are welcome join us at any time and you may leave us at any time.  You are welcome to rejoin after a time of absence.

(I am new at blogging.  I hope this method of sharing works well for everyone who would like to join us.  Please forgive any ineptitude on my part.  I will do my best.  If you have suggestions for improving this blog please tell me.)

God's blessing to each of you.  May God's word be a rich source of direction and joy for your life.

Tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 28) I will post the readings for the first week of  2013.
